Printing History Start to End by The Print Serve

The word “Printing” means to produce a text or an image by using a specific process of printing. Now, this word is widely used in our daily lives. We are using so many ways of printing to produce the text and images as per our requirement.

History of Printing:

The printing history is older than a men’s history. The word printing is to be used in the history of books since 200 B.C. During that period people used the wood blocks for producing images and text in China.

The block printing has reached in Arab world in nine or tenth century. The Muslims used wood blocks for the printing of Holy Quran. This technique used by Egyptians first time. Islamic world introduced the blocks of metal and clay and they used it for a long time. The blocks of metal remained unknown by Europe till that time.

The block printing has reached Europe from the hand of Muslims in 1300. They print the cloths for this technique of printing. The paper has been invented and widely used in printing till 1400. First printing press has been established by Johannes Gutenberg in 1450. This was the first movable type of printing technique. This technique is used for the printing of playing cards.

Printing Press
The Printing Press:

The invention of movable type of printing by Johannes Gutenberg in 1450 was revolution in printing world. Gutenberg was first German who used this technique very first time.

As compare to wood block printing, movable type of printing is durable and speedy. After that so many printing presses has been started all over the Europe. In 1478, The Oxford University has started the printing press. The big printing presses has been started in Europe till 1600.

Rotery Printing Press was first invented in 1843. In this technique a carved roller is used to print the image and text on paper rolls. This drum was very much improved after the passage of time.

Letterpress Printing is a technique of printing in which many copies of a single image or text is printed.

Offset Printing is invented in 1875. In this technique of printing the plates are dampened, first by water rollers, and then ink rollers. The rollers distribute the ink from the ink fountain onto the plates. The image area of the plates picks up ink from the ink rollers. The water rollers keep the ink off of the non image areas of the plate. Each plate then transfers its image to a rubber blanket that in turn transfers the image to paper. The plate itself does not actually touch the paper. Through this technique the speed of the printing reached to 14000 impressions per hour.

There are other techniques which are used after the offset printing.
  • ·         Photocopier invented in 1907
  • ·         Screen printing started in 1910
  • ·         Inkjet printing invented in 1955
  • ·         Dot Matrix printing invented in 1968
  • ·         Laser printer invented in 1969
  • ·         Thermal / DNA printing in 1972
  • ·         3D printing invented in 1984
  • ·         Digital printing invented in 1991

Now, printing is widely accepted in all areas of our daily routine life. So many printing presses are established all over the world. They are using and making new techniques for the satisfying their customer needs and providing quality printing services to the industry.

Printing History by The Print Serve

OFFSET PRINTING

Printing History: History of Printing is too old and it is started from China since 200 B.C. People used carved wood blocks for text and image printing. In 1400 it has reached in Europe via Islamic world. This printing technique is used usually for Holy images and Playing Cards. In 1439 Gutenberg, a German, first used this terminology of printing in a law case in Strasbourg. During the early decades, German printing predominates. More books are published in Germany than anywhere else. The first printing press is found in 1461 in Italy. Oxford University has also started the printing in 1478. The printing has established their roots in all over Europe by the end of 1600. In 1498 the first paper mill has been established in England.

Offset Printing: Through this printing process image transferred to a rubber blanket by metallic plate and then transfer to paper. This method is used today and has many advantages on other forms of printing, especially when we require high quality of printing image.

Offset printing used 4 color process known as CMYK (Cyan Megenta Yellow Kblack key). Offset printing also known as Offset Lithography and widely used printing technique in which the inked image on a printing plate is printed on a rubber blanket and then transferred to a paper or other material. Offset printing, as a development of lithography, is based on the principle that water and grease do not mix, so that a greasy ink can be deposited on  printing areas of the plate, while non printing areas, which hold water, reject the ink.
